Happy National Day, Singapore!
In 2009, He Shuming and his classmates made the short film “National Day” as part of their final year project. Together with Norma de Souza who produced it and Goh Hiro Toshi Thomas who was the director of cinematography, Shuming wrote and directed the film.
This film has since traveled to festivals such as the 13th Thai Short Film and Video Festival in Bangkok, 5th Singapore Short Film Festival in Singapore, 11th Jakarta International Film Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia, 32nd Recontres Henri Langlois in Poitiers, France, Project:Slingshot 2009 in London, 2011 Asian Cultural Cinema Symposium in Singapore and the Maskara Geylang Short Film Screening, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The film was most recently screened at the 22nd European Union Film Festival in Singapore in May 2012.
The film is a very human story with a national day backdrop which ends up being a more authentic portrayal of an important date in Singapore’s calendar. There are many advertisements, music videos and official national day media produced at great expense so here’s wishing they can take a leaf out of these students’ film book.
He Shuming is about to commence his Directing Fellowship at the American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles. Many thanks to Shu for sharing the film and poster with us.
